Copilot vs ChatGPT is the one major comparison on this site where the standard framing is out of date, and checking Microsoft's own pricing page is enough to see it. Nearly every published version of this matchup pits ChatGPT Plus against Copilot Pro at twenty dollars each. Microsoft does not list Copilot Pro any more. What it sells individuals today is a three-rung Microsoft 365 ladder with the AI folded in, which changes the question from "which twenty-dollar assistant" to "do you want an Office subscription or an assistant." Three products share the name, and only one of them is a fair opponent for ChatGPT. Choosing the wrong one is why so many comparisons of this pair contradict each other.

Three individual tiers and one business seat, with no standalone AI-only consumer plan among them. The twenty-dollar AI subscription Microsoft used to sell has been absorbed into the Office bundle, so buying the AI now means buying the productivity suite.

Two structural facts fall out of that table. The AI you can buy from Microsoft as an individual is now inseparable from an Office subscription, so the comparison is no longer like for like. And the tier that carries the genuinely differentiated capability is the business seat, which an individual cannot buy for themselves at all. Do Copilot and ChatGPT answer differently?

Less than the branding suggests, and the differences that exist come from tuning rather than intelligence. Microsoft and OpenAI have a supply relationship, so a good deal of what Copilot returns is shaped by the same model lineage that powers ChatGPT.

Where they diverge is register and length. Copilot is tuned toward short, search-flavoured, grounded replies suitable for someone glancing at a sidebar mid-document. ChatGPT is tuned toward longer, more exploratory answers suitable for someone who came to the app on purpose. Neither is better in the abstract; they are optimised for different postures.

Where Copilot beats ChatGPT and cannot be replaced

One capability here is not a preference and not a benchmark. It is structural, and no third-party assistant can reach it.

• AI inside the live document. Copilot operates on the actual workbook object, not on text you pasted into a chat window. It reads the sheet, rewrites the formula, and edits the cells. A chat app cannot do this at any price because it has no handle on the file.
• Inbox and calendar context. Triage that knows who the thread is with and what is on your calendar tomorrow.
• Tenant governance. On the business seat, data handling, compliance boundaries and admin control that an individual subscription never offers.

The premise both products share is single-vendor supply. Copilot routes you to one company's models, and so does ChatGPT. That is fine until the week you need a model that company does not make, and then it is a second subscription.
