What Actually Ended, in One Table

Two things are worth separating here, because most coverage blurs them. The consumer Copilot Pro plan is what retired. The business product (Microsoft 365 Copilot, licensed per seat by your employer) is a different SKU on a different roadmap and is not going anywhere. If your Copilot access comes through work, nothing in this article applies to you.

Option 1: Microsoft 365 Premium (~$19.99/mo)

This is Microsoft's intended landing spot. Premium bundles what Copilot Pro gave you (Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, priority model access, higher usage limits) with the Microsoft 365 apps themselves and up to 6 TB of cloud storage, for about $19.99/mo or $199.99/year.

When this is genuinely the right answer: you were already paying for Microsoft 365 Personal and Copilot Pro separately. In that case Premium consolidates two bills into one at roughly the price of the more expensive of them, and you should take it. The AI-inside-Excel integration in particular is Microsoft's own and cannot be replicated by a third-party chat app: nothing else can sit inside a spreadsheet and manipulate it directly.

When it is not: you subscribed to Copilot Pro because you wanted a good AI assistant, and the Office tie-in was incidental. Then Premium is $19.99/mo for one model family, wrapped in an app suite you may not need, when the market's better multi-model plans are cheaper.

Also worth knowing before you upgrade reflexively: if you already have Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, you already have Copilot capabilities in the desktop apps. Premium is an upgrade to higher limits and more storage, not the only path back to AI in Word.

Option 2: A Multi-Model Plan (from $14.99/mo)

Here is the argument for not replacing a single-vendor subscription with another single-vendor subscription.

Copilot Pro gave you Microsoft's Copilot. One model family, one vendor's judgment about which model you should be talking to, one set of refusal behaviours. When it was the only $20 AI plan you had, that was fine. In August 2026 it is a strange thing to pay a premium for, because the standard shape of a consumer AI plan has changed: several frontier families under one subscription, with the ability to move between them.

Perspective AI is $14.99/mo (five dollars less than Microsoft 365 Premium) and includes:

• GPT-5.5 for general drafting, tool use and agentic work
• Claude Opus 4.8 for long documents, careful reasoning and code review
• Gemini 3.1 Pro for large-context work and Google-ecosystem tasks
• Grok 4.3 for real-time information
• DeepSeek and other open-weights models for cheap bulk work
• Mid-conversation model switching: ask Claude for the analysis, switch to GPT for the rewrite, in the same thread

The last one is the part that has no Copilot Pro equivalent. Copilot decides which model answers you. A multi-model app hands that decision back, which matters most on exactly the work people bought Copilot Pro for: drafting, summarising and analysis, where different families are visibly better at different jobs.

What Copilot Pro Was Good At, and What Carries Over

It is worth being fair to the product that just ended, because it decides which replacement is right for you.

Copilot inside the Office apps was the genuinely differentiated part. Not "Copilot can write you a paragraph"; every chatbot does that. The differentiated thing was Copilot sitting inside an actual Excel workbook with access to the sheet, or inside an Outlook thread with access to the thread. No third-party chat app can do this, because the integration is Microsoft's own and runs against the document object rather than against text you pasted. If this is what you used, no amount of model quality elsewhere replaces it, and Microsoft 365 Premium is your answer. This carries over to Premium, and in reduced form to Personal and Family.

Priority access and higher limits were the second selling point. During peak hours, free Copilot degrades to smaller models; Pro did not. This carries over to Premium.

Everything else was a chat window. Drafting, summarising, brainstorming, research, code help: all done in a browser tab or the Copilot app, against whichever model Microsoft routed you to. This is where the great majority of Copilot Pro usage actually lived, and it is completely replaceable, usually by something cheaper with a wider model list. This does not carry over in any way you should pay $19.99/mo to preserve.

One more thing worth flagging while you are re-evaluating: Microsoft has been retiring individual Copilot features alongside the plan itself, including Deep Research and the podcast generation feature. If a specific capability was your reason for staying, confirm it still exists before you renew into Premium for it.

The Replacement Options, Priced

Two readings fall out of that table. If Office integration is load-bearing for your work, Microsoft 365 Premium is the only product on the list that delivers it, and $19.99/mo is a fair price for Office plus AI. A Note for Business Users

Because the naming is confusing, plenty of people hitting this retirement notice are not affected by it. Microsoft 365 Copilot, the per-seat product an employer licenses, is a separate SKU from the consumer Copilot Pro plan that just ended, and it is not being retired. Microsoft in fact expanded that side of the lineup on 1 July 2026, repricing Copilot Business to roughly $21/user/mo and adding bundled SKUs: Business Standard with Copilot at about $23.50/user/mo, Business Premium with Copilot at about $32/user/mo, and an E7 Frontier Suite at about $99/user/mo that folds in Agent 365 and the Entra Suite.

The rule of thumb: if you pay for Copilot with your own card, this retirement is your problem. If it appears in your work account and IT manages it, it is not. Mixed cases exist: plenty of people bought Copilot Pro personally because their employer would not license it, and those people are now choosing a replacement out of pocket, which is exactly the scenario where a $14.99/mo multi-model plan beats a $19.99/mo single-model one.

What to Do This Week

1. Check what you're actually still paying for. Copilot Pro stopped renewing on 1 August, but a separate Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription bills independently and is still live. Confirm which of the two you had before you buy anything.

2. Answer one question honestly: did you use Copilot inside Word and Excel, or in the chat window? This decides everything. Inside the apps → Microsoft 365 Premium. In the chat window → a multi-model plan, cheaper.

3. If it was the chat window, don't re-buy a single-model plan. Copilot Pro at $20, ChatGPT Plus at $20 and Claude Pro at $20 are all the same shape of purchase: one vendor, one family. Perspective AI is $14.99/mo for several families at once, which is the cheaper version of the thing you were doing.

4. Business users: do nothing. If your Copilot came through your employer, this retirement is not your event.

The Short Version

Copilot Pro ended on 1 August 2026 after ten months of being unsellable, and Microsoft's answer is to fold it into a $19.99/mo Office bundle. That is a good outcome for people who wanted Office and AI together, and a mediocre one for everybody else, who are now being asked to pay above market for a single model family.
